Spaghetti is a classic Italian dish that is loved by many around the world. Here's a basic recipe for making spaghetti:
Ingredients:
- 1 pound (454 g) spaghetti
- 4-6 quarts (3.8-5.7 liters) of water
- 1-2 teaspoons salt
- 2-3 tablespoons olive oil
- 3-4 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 oz or 800 g) of whole peeled tomatoes
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Optional toppings: grated Parmesan cheese, chopped fresh parsley
Instructions:
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Use about 4-6 quarts of water for every pound of spaghetti.
Add 1-2 teaspoons of salt to the boiling water.
Add the spaghetti to the pot and stir to prevent it from sticking together.
Cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions, usually about 8-12 minutes, or until al dente (cooked but still firm).
While the spaghetti is cooking, heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
Add the can of whole peeled tomatoes to the saucepan, crushing them with your hands or a fork.
Season the tomato sauce with salt and black pepper to taste.
Bring the tomato sauce to a simmer and cook for about 10-15 minutes until it has thickened and the flavors have melded together.
Once the spaghetti is cooked, reserve about 1 cup of the cooking water and then drain the rest.
Add the cooked spaghetti to the tomato sauce and toss it with the sauce until it's evenly coated. If the sauce is too thick, add some of the reserved cooking water to thin it out.
Serve the spaghetti hot, topped with grated Parmesan cheese and chopped fresh parsley if desired.
Note: You can also add other ingredients to the tomato sauce, such as chopped onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, or ground beef, for added flavor and nutrition. Additionally, you can use fresh tomatoes instead of canned tomatoes for a different flavor and texture.
